Super Simple Berry Smoothie
1 cup mixed frozen berries, preferably organic (we love blueberries and raspberries)
1 cup baby spinach (or any dark leafy green of your choice)
1/2 ripe banana, fresh or frozen
2 tablespoons hemp hearts or 1/4 avocado
1 cup unsweetened almond milk (or other dairy alternative)
1/2 cup water (depending on how thick you like it)
Add all of the ingredients in your blender and blend until smooth – about 1-2 minutes. Enjoy right away.
Here’s a ‘fat’ tip!
It’s important to add a bit of good-quality fat to your smoothies – this allows certain nutrients (i.e. the fat soluble ones like vitamins A, D E and K) to be better absorbed by your body. The ingredients in this smoothie, as with many other fruit/veggie smoothies, are rich in these fat-soluble vitamins, namely vitamins A and K, making it extra important to add a little healthy fat to reap the most nutrition with each sip. Plus, the fat will help balance blood sugars which help ward off cravings and hunger pangs. Besides hemp hearts and avocado, other superfats you can use include virgin coconut oil, raw nut butters, chia and flax seeds.
