Creamy Sesame Broccoli

Sometimes a craving hits for the classic broccoli and cheese combination. But if you’re avoiding dairy, or just wanting to lighten up your diet, our upgraded version of a ‘cheese’ sauce can very well satisfy that craving and provide a tasty way to get in more greens. This dish has all of the creaminess of a traditional cheese sauce but is made with tahini instead. Tahini is a creamy spread, or paste, made from ground sesame seeds and is loaded with minerals such as calcium and magnesium, as well as vitamins B and E. There is no cheesy guilt with this sauce!

Creamy Sesame Broccoli

Serves 4.

  • 1 head of broccoli (approx. 6 cups), cut into florets
  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 4-5 cloves garlic
  • 1/2 lemon, juiced
  • 2 tablespoons tahini
  • 2-3 tablespoons water
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds (optional)

In a small bowl, combine the lemon juice and tahini and stir. Slowly add the water 1 tablespoon at a time until you reach a creamy and yet pourable consistency. Season with salt.

In a pan heat the olive oil over medium heat and sauté the garlic for 30-60 seconds until lightly golden. Add in the broccoli florets and sauté until slightly seared and cooked but still slightly crunchy and vibrant green in colour (about 5-8 minutes). Place the broccoli on a serving plate, drizzle with the creamy tahini sauce and top with the optional sesame seeds.
